Amaliya Early Learning Centre
The Amaliya Early Learning Centre is an early intervention center for hearing impaired infants and young children up to 5 years of age. It is a non-residential, private and non-profit organization located at No.18, R. A. De Mel Mawatha, Colombo 5.

The aim of the Centre is to provide an opportunity for deaf children to learn to listen and develop speech with our comprehensive intervention program.

The Centre has spacious sound treated class rooms clean surroundings, a well equipped library and child friendly play areas.

At the initial stage the teacher student ratio is 1:1 and as they progress the children are grouped and a maximum ratio of 1:4 is maintained. All the children at the Centre, including the ones with severe or profound hearing loss, acquire speech and language skills and they will learn to overcome the obstacles imposed by the hearing loss.

Our goal is to help the children make best use of their residual hearing through the constant use of suitable hearing aids or cochlear implants and develop age appropriate languages skills. The curriculum prepares each child to enroll in a regular school at the earliest possible age. They will do so as soon as they demonstrate the skills necessary for competing successfully in a regular school environment.

Currently the centre offers English and Sinhala mediums. The caregivers’ fluency in the language decides the medium of instruction. The parents are helped to teach the children in either of the languages.

Early Intervention Program
Children are enrolled from birth to 2 ½ years in the Early Intervention program. The children attend the program for one hour Monday through Friday.
On completion of the Early Intervention Program the children will join the Preschool Program. The age of the children in the Preschool Program ranges from 2 ½ to 5 years. There is no direct admission into Preschool Program.
The parents are equal partners in the program. They are guided to convert every situation at home into a language situation. They are trained to become the RESOURCE PERSONS for their child once the child joins a mainstream school.
The Amaliya Early Learning Centre has formulated an effective syllabus that includes the parents as equal partners in the program. The methodology is named ‘DHVANI’ – ‘Development of Hearing, Voice and Natural Integration’.
